Hi, my name is Miranda! I’m 22 years old and live in Ypsilanti, Michigan. In my family, my grandma has Huntington’s Disease. Her older brother passed away from the disease, and two of her other 5 siblings have also been diagnosed. In May of 2015 my mom tested negative for HD, making me, and my two siblings negative as well. I joined the NYA in 2014 and attended my first convention in 2015. Before attending convention the only other youth that I knew that were affected by HD were my siblings and my cousins, so I was excited to meet other people going through the same thing I was. When I got to convention, I had never felt so welcomed by a group of people the way I was with the NYA. After that convention I wanted to become more involved with the NYA because I wanted other youth to have the same feeling I did. I wanted them to know that they weren’t alone and that there were people out there like the members of the NYA that could help them get through having to live with HD.
